The vibrant community we share today is built on a deep foundation of faith, compassion, and fellowship that dates back nearly two centuries. For generations, Zion Church has been more than just a place of worship—it has been a cornerstone for families, a launching pad for leaders across the country, and a sanctuary for those seeking a better way of living. In 1940, our congregation paused to reflect on 100 years of ministry and the legacy of the original seven trustees who planted the seeds of our community.
Here is a look at our story, documented during that historic 100th-anniversary celebration:
History of Zion Church
“In the year 1840 the community now called Zion organized a Society of Methodists and built a chapel on a lot of ground deeded to seven who were appointed trustees and their successors in trust for said Methodist Chapel, the aald deed being given by one, David Mills and his wife, Polly Mills, to the following as Trustees: Elisha Parker of Samuel Sydnum, H. Mills, Thomas White, John Parker, S. Samuel Gordy, Jacob Parker and Samuel Q. White, all of Worcester County and now Wicomico County. Some of the descendants of the above named Trustees still live in the community and still give their support to the present congregation. Others have gone to other fields of labor in the different walks of life; some in the ministry, some to other churches where they are filling prominent positions in the work of the Kingdom. Others have found their calling in the political and financial world among whom is one who has made it possible for many aged people to enjoy their last days in restful quiet and pleasure. There are others who have come to the community since the first society was formed and have served well, and their children and grandchildren are doing equally as well here and at other places in the different walks of life.
Since now we have arrived at the year 1940, those members who now form the congregation of the present Society, have de cided to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Society in honor of those who one hundred years ago saw the need of a place of worship in this community and at that time wrought marvels in the work of the Lord which has helped many to find the better way of living and enjoying life more fully and on Sunday, September 15, 1940, in an all day’s service to be held in the present Church, will be commemorated the one hundredth anniversary of its founding.
All those who have lived here in former days and attended the Church, but who have gone to other fields, have been invited to return on Sunday, September 15, 1940, and renew old acquaintances and enjoy the services of the day at old Zion. Some who were reared in Zion community have gone as far south as North Carolina, others as far north as New York, while others have traveled as far west as Texas.”

Music Ministry
Denny McLeod leads our Music Ministry at Zion Church. Under his direction, the Zion Choir provides special music during morning worship. This fun, welcoming group is always open to new voices, and Denny’s unique arrangements and medleys offer a joyful reminder of the power of worship through music.
